Through Moody Methodist Church I got to travel with a great group to Belmopan, Belize in May (2014). We were sent to work on a school there- to level the 2nd floor's floor and to build a storage. We also attended & participated in church while we were there. Some of us got to teach a subject during the kids' school hours. & after hours we got to play soccer with them.

Some of the group working on the storage building.

Almost done with the storage building, Hector was our maintenance contact.

We worked on the floor of the 2nd floor, more work has been done since.

During our stay we stayed at Camalote Camp. The owners made us food and ensured we had a great time! Don't these hammocks look inviting?!

We went outside of Camalote Camp and hung out with the community kids.

When we were done with construction for the day we made short day trips to tourist areas like the Xunantunich ruins. When you stand at the top you overlook Guatemala. The stairs were insane to climb, tall and short steps, some smooth and slippery; but it was worth it. We hit some tourist areas on the way out, you can haggle here.

We also went on a baboon sanctuary tour that featured howler monkeys and the guide taught us the medicinal properties of the native plants.

We also got to go zip lining through the forest and go cave tubing in the same park. We sadly didn't see many forest animals while we were there :(

Nearby was a store called the Art Box which had cool things inside. On the way in is a common catch phrase:

On our way out to our main excursions we went through Belize City. The weather was always amazing! The buildings are near the beaches and where the water taxi dock is you can see stingrays by the shallow shore. Vendors are everywhere- haggle!

We then took the San Pedro ferry to Ambergis Caye and to our house the Blue Dolphin. The water is so beautifully blue and the sand is soft. Definitely paradise! Along Ambergis Caye there are docks that people dropped off of to snorkel and see starfish, coral, fish, etc. The water is only clear if a storm hasn't recently come through, otherwise you won't see much. I believe we had one storm during the night while we were there.

Excuse this poor quality photo below, it was taken with an underwater camera. We went to Hol Chan Reef, Ambergris Caye and SWAM WITH SHARKS!! That's always been a bucket list item of mine. These nurse sharks were so cool! Our guide is holding an 8-9 footer so we can take pictures with it. The boat crew drops a feeding tube which attracts the sharks and sting rays- try to swim down to touch them, they feel slimy soft! The boat crew also drops chum at the surface of the water to attract sharks which is shown in the 2nd photo.

If you're wanting to go on a great trip, Belize has everything! The barrier reef is the 2nd largest in the world and Belize is also home to the Blue Hole.

We did and learned so much on this trip. I loved exploring Belize and the Cayes. I hope you get to visit one day. Feel free to shoot me an email if you have questions or would like to learn more details. ♥
